Choosing a Contractor

When the time comes to choose a contractor, how will you distinguish between a certified, experienced contractor and a ‘Wish I never meet you contractor’? A little research and some probing questions can help you make the right decision and save you time and money. Here are a few tips to find an Electrician or other Contractor.

1.

Insure that the contractor is licensed and registered with the state or County.

2.

Check with the State or County Consumer Affairs office to make sure their license is current & any disciplinary actions. Below are links to some of these sites:

New York City
3.

Check with the Better Business Bureau in your area to check for any complaints against the contractor.

4.

Ask for proof of the contractor's liability insurance. Ask for copies of the insurance certificates to verify coverage.

5.

Ask for proof of the contractor's  workers' compensation insurance. Ask for copies of the insurance certificates to verify coverage.  Be aware that if the contractor does not carry workers’ compensation coverage, you may be liable for any medical bills or injuries suffered by the contractor, or any of his/her employees on your property. You need to be certain that you are properly protected from personal injury lawsuits if this person gets injured while working on your property.

6.

Get a written contract.

7.

Ask for References.

8.

Call the References.

9.

Don't automatically choose the lowest bidder.
